Besakih the Mother Temple
The gods then arrived in
Bali, and as the Pacupati god told them, they find and choose their
place to stand. Mahadewa god stay in Tohlangkir (Mount Agung), the
highest mountain in Bali. People of Bali then build a temple called
Besakih. The name Besakih derive from the word Basuki mean safe. This
was related with PANCADATU ‘s (5 metals) buried by Rsi Markandeya in
order to be safe from sickness and obstacles. (from script Markandeya
Purana) In another script, Padma Bhuwana, it was then said Besakih
temple was the Head or the Soul of Bali. This was related to the place
itself. This temple is sited in North-East of Bali, where the mountain
and the sun arise every day and give it’s light to the earth as one
source of life in the world. Actually Besakih Temple consist of 18
temples with its own function. Besakih also called Rwa Bhineda temple,
which means to worship god as the creator of purusa (spiritual) and
pradana(material) so the people will understand on how to live in the
world that is to make the life in balance for body and soul. This temple
was then become a mother temple where every Balinese will worship their
gods.
Ceremonies
Ceremonies are held in certain date, month and within certain interval
of time.
