Legong Dance :
Legong Dance
There are some Legong Dances but the famous Legong Dances are:
Legong Keraton
This Legong dance start to appear in mid-17th century. At the time, Bali was govermned by some Kings. Puri (where the kings live) is a place to create and to perform not only new tabuh (traditional music) but also new dances. According to Dewa Agung Karna's Palmscript, the son of the first king in the kingdom of Sukawati, in his meditation, he saw two celestial angels dancing in glittering gold costume. He then, summoned the court musicians and dancers and taught them what they had seen and called the dance: The Sanghyang Legong. Since then on, Legong dance was danced and improvised as many as the varieties now known. In the 20th centuries, Legong Dance is danced by 2 or 3 female dancers in the show everywhere now. The story behind the dance was taken from the theme of Malat, a classic literature telling about the agreement of Panji, Javanese hero.
Legong Kuntir
This dance inspired from the story of
Ramayana. It was told that one time there was a Rsi lived with his two
sons, Arya Bang, Arya Kuning and a daughter called Dewi
Anjani.
One day, his father gives rings to both his son and a mirror named Cupu
Manik to his daughter. Cupu Manik is a very special mirror that can see
the past, the present and the future. Because of the speciality of the
Cupu Manik, both his son wanted to own it and try to seize it from their
sister. Seeing what had happened, the Rsi became angry to both sons and
threw away Cupu Manik down to the pond. Because of their anxiety to own
the Cupu Manik, they were competing to dive and fight in the water, but
they could not find it. Alas, coming out from the water, their bodies
had changed into monkeys.
